Do you remember when you were at school and you had studied so hard for a test that you woke up in the middle of the night thinking about the subject?
I'm hoping this wasn't an original experience as that would make me feel a bit weird, but this happened very frequently to me, particularly when it came to math or physics. Thankfully, I no longer have to study for math or physics tests, but now this tends to happen whenever I'm fixating too hard on something.
That's how I've found myself waking up to full outfits that I built in my dreams. Yes, I mean that literally. I actually woke up the other day a clumsily written: “orange knit + blue trousers + pointy slingback kitten heels”. Mind you I did not own any of these items — I did very recently acquire a pair of navy trousers, unrelated to my midnight delusions. Throughout the day, I've also had random outfits pop in my head, which does make me kind of worried for my mental health, but it's also kind of fun.
This brings me to today's post, in which I plan to put my potentially unhealthy hyperfixations to use and go over ideas, trends and outfit combos I've been loving lately.
This is The End of The Shift, a space for thoughts on fashion and daily styling. Welcome! If you like what you see, please consider subscribing, I'd love to have you around.
1. Pops of white
It's hardly revolutionary to use white as a source of contrast in an outfit, but there's something very crisp and intentional about the way I've been seeing it done lately. These specific looks from the Prada runway that paired a white skirt with deep brown suede scratch an itch deep inside my head. Here's how I plan on incorporating it into my life:
2. Pleats, please
I'm obsessed by anything from pleats, please by Issey Miyake, but I've specifically been after a pair of black pants.
I've tirelessly scoured the internet after them, but unfortunately my search so far has not been successful. I did, however, find a green version in my size, but it's a little above the budget I had in mind so I'll have to sit on it and pray no one snatches it up in the meantime — oh, the ups and downs of thrifting. Even though I don't have the black pair I'm after, I do have a pair of wrinkled cream pants that are similar enough in style to attempt to fill the pleated pants-shaped hole in my wardrobe for now. Here's how I'm styling them:
3. Open-knit sweaters
This. The perfect effortlessness from a barely-there knit sweater. The softness and allure it brings to an outfit. I used to own a similar white zara knit that quite literally unraveled from so much wear! This does feel very thriftable, so that's what I'm trying to do.
Whenever I find the one, I plan to pair it with black trousers or a straight-cut black skirt to work, with white linnen pants for a casual just left the beach vibe and I have a vision of wearing it with the tassel and silver pendant necklaces I recently thrifted, which I talked about in my last post.
Before you go…
A little disclaimer that's been on my mind.
Whenever I see a post going over “current favorites”, it inevitably turns into a shopping list. Even though I think there's definetly room for that and I myself love going through lists from people's whose style I admire, I didn't want this post to turn into that.
While I believe it's inevitable that we feel the urge to buy new pieces whenever we see outfits we love, balance can be found — and that's what I aim for. Writing this letter in itself was a way for me to think how to work these things into my style without shopping through it all.
We can shop new things, curate our collections, but also shop our wadrobes and wear out things we already own. That's why I try to focus on ideas instead of things, and I try to show examples of working with what's in my own closet when possible. I hope this comes through to you, the reader, and that you can apply that to your wardrobe if that's something you want to do.
Wrapping this up, just know this is a safe space regardless of weather you shop all new trends or haven't bought anything new for yourself since 2016!
